Summary

Eda Schaur, born 1945, received her Dipl.Ing. degree in architecture from the University of Graz, Austria and her Dr.-Ing. (PhD) in Architecture from the University of Stuttgart, Germany; doctoral adviser Frei Otto. She was research fellow at the “Institute of Lightweight Structures” (IL), director Frei Otto, University of Stuttgart, from 1972 to 1995. She was a research fellow of the SFB64 “Weitgespannte Flächentragwerke” “Wide-spanned Surface Structures”; researchch fields: formfinding and constructin of grid shells (IL10); formgenerating processes in living nature and technic (IL9 IL19); relationship of form mass and efficienty of structures (IL21). She was member SFB230 “Natürliche Konstruktionen” “Natural Structures – Lightweight Structures in Architecture and Nature” responsible for the sub-project C”/IL Natural Processes – Formation and Alternation Processes of Human Settlements”.

Teaching and research activities in India at the School of Architecture Ahmedabad 1976 – 1987.

Together with Yona Friedman founder of the “Communucation Centre of Scientific Knowledge for Self-Reliance”, Paris, an Institution of the United Nations University (UNU)

Since1995 Professorship at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, founding the “Institut für Konstruktion und Gestaltung – KoGe” (Institute of Structure and Design). Here the fields of researchare mainly address the interrelation of design and structure, wherein a form stands as well for the quality of design as for the efficiency of structure like the irregularity as aspects of design and structure and multilayer-prestressed-membranes.
